Importance of Descriptive Flexfield or DFF

Descriptive flexfields are a feature that allows you to track extra information that is important and specific to your business. There are two types of segments in descriptive flexfields: global segments and context-sensitive segments.

Global segments always appear in the flexfield window, while context-sensitive segments may or may not appear depending on the information entered in other parts of the form.

Descriptive flexfields add extra columns to a database table to store the information. Each possible segment requires a column, and there is an additional column to store the structure information.

Descriptive flexfields are useful because they allow you to capture additional information on standard screens where there may not be a specific field available. This gives flexibility to capture customer-specific details that are not covered by the standard fields.

Global Segment: A global segment is basically those segments in DFF that is available throughout the enterprise (visible to every employee in the enterprise doesn’t matter to which legal employer or department or job they belong to).

Context Sensitive Segment: A context-sensitive segment is a segment that may or may not appear depending upon what other information is present in your form.
