Learning Communities in Oracle Learning Cloud: Categories, Topics, and Community Types

Category and Topic Communities

You can create an organized structure for the content that learners see when browsing the learning catalog, using category and topic communities. The same hierarchical structure applies to both official and self-service learning community catalogs.

Example:

To help learners find content about Microsoft Office, you create these topic communities:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Outlook

Add relevant learning items to each topic community, then create a Microsoft Office category community and include your Microsoft topic communities within it.

Details:

  • Categories can contain topic and official communities and only allow learning administrators to have conversations.
  • Categories do not support cover art. If a category description is added, the default cover art will display repeatedly on the Browse Learning page. To avoid this, omit the description.
  • Topics can contain:
    • Official Communities
    • Self-Service Communities
    • Courses
    • Specializations
    • Videos
    • Learning Journeys
  • Topics support conversations for both admins and community members.

Best Practice: Have 3 to 10 topics per category. If there are more than 10 topics, consider creating another category for better navigation.

Official and Self-Service Communities

  • Official Communities give learners access to organization-provided content and allow automated assignments for required members.
  • Self-Service Communities allow learners to collaborate and share knowledge with peers.

Examples:

  • An official Onboarding Community provides initial training and documents to new hires.
  • A Holiday Decorations Self-Service Community is created by a retail employee to let others share videos and ideas across stores.

Learners can browse and enroll in both official and self-service communities (open or closed). They can also access communities they were directly added to as members or required members, even if they cannot browse by categories.
