Display Name - Used when a person's name is displayed on a page. The person header in-person management is a good example of where Display Name is used.
Full Name (don’t update this one) - Used when a person's name is required for reporting purposes. It is also used as part of the Person Search Keywords and Name fields.
List Name - Used when a person's name is displayed and available for sorting data. The person search results table is a good example of where List Name is used.
Preferred Name is just one of several name attributes that could be displayed and searchable. Please note that it is actually the KNOWN_AS column in the person names table. Display Name is a name that is constructed based on individual name attributes, like first name, last name, known as, etc.
